[ARTICLE] PropTech or Construtech?

  • Thanks for the shout-out, Gustavo. In 2013/2014 when the MIT Center for Real Estate first started following commercial real estate focused technology startups we called it RE tech, which gained some traction for awhile. Later, we observed the emerging Proptech term in the UK, and that it more broadly included solutions and companies involved in the single-family part of the business. Given the Center's focus on commercial real estate, we subsequently refered to it as CRE tech. Now that the lines are blurring between real estate tech, construction tech, AEC tech, smart-city tech, transit tech, etc., maybe we're evolving toward Built Environment Tech, which is quite a mouth-full!

    You could almost say @Steve_Weikal that as the entire built environment is property in the commercial sense of the word, that PropTech is in fact a perfect catch all!
